Between generations lies the unknown. A place of memory and spirit, where ancestral knowledge meets the imaginings of future makers.
Grounded in wisdom of the past and charged by voices of the future, GENERATIONS is a bold new double bill curated by Mirning woman Frances Rings, Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director and Co-CEO. Bringing together First Nations cultural leaders with acclaimed artists this is a unique dance theatre experience. Journey with Bangarra through a world where sacred knowledge and contemporary ideas converge in movement, music and design, propelling memory into a powerful current of new possibilities.
Sever · Rom Bukthunami
Renowned Yolŋu songman and artist of the Wangurri clan Douglas Djakapurra Munyarryun joins Kullilli man and longstanding Bangarra company member Rikki Mason to create Sever · Rom Bukthunami – a powerful exploration of fractured belonging. Where do you belong when you live between worlds? How does culture take root in urban landscapes? How can young people reconcile ancestral knowledge with emerging technologies? Through Munyarryun’s songline, Sever · Rom Bukthunami explores these urgent questions, tracing the tensions between cultural inheritance, identity and the search for connection.
SpearHead · Kunpu Kanyini
Pipalyatjara Elder Josephine Mick is a respected healer, artist, irrepressible songwoman and champion of the tjakura (Great Desert Skink). Like all women of the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, she carries a profound responsibility for Culture, Country and Community. Working with acclaimed choreographer and former Bangarra dancer Jasmin Sheppard, and Josephine’s daughter Sally Scales as cultural consultant, SpearHead · Kunpu Kanyini celebrates the strength, leadership and enduring power of Central Desert women. It is a dynamic ceremony of song and dance, set against an ancient desert landscape brimming with life, and a deep commitment to caring for Country.
GENERATIONS reminds us the future is not out there waiting to be found – it is already moving within us. Ancestral knowledge is awakened by the voices of the future, shaping a vision for what comes next: alive, evolving and ready to be danced into being.
We invite First Nations Community to join us for the first performance of GENERATIONS on Thursday, 1 July 2027. The Community First performance includes a ‘pre-show yarn’ and complimentary tea and coffee; a unique and personal gathering before the curtain rises. Community members also have the chance to meet and talk directly with Bangarra’s dancers after the show. This is a special opportunity to connect, share stories, and celebrate the deep cultural threads woven through Bangarra’s work.
If you are unable to make it to our Community First performance, we also offer a dedicated allocation of subsidised Community tickets throughout the season, ensuring greater access and opportunities for Community to share in the experience of Bangarra’s storytelling.

Pre-show notes are available prior to the performance, providing insight into sections that cannot be described live, due to cultural protocols or sound levels.
