Join artist Norton Fredericks for a vibrant, hands-on workshop exploring the chemistry and beauty of botanical dyeing.

In this artist-led workshop, Norton will walk you through native plants and their uses, the chemistry behind natural dyes, and Norton’s own art practice.

Using locally foraged plants, you’ll learn bundle dyeing techniques and walk away with your own eco-printed hemp and recycled cotton tote bag, plus two pieces of watercolour paper – creative, sustainable and uniquely yours.

Meet your instructor

Norton Fredericks (they/he) born 1990 in Tulmur, Ipswich is an early career interdisciplinary visual artist and workshop facilitator. Norton has mixed European and Aboriginal Australian (Murri) heritage and currently lives on Kombumerri Country, Gold Coast.

Norton’s practice-based research often sits at the intersection between art and science examining the external forces that impact on both the human experience and the environment around us. Their work explores themes of environmental threats, post naturalism, queer ecologies, and their intersectional identity. They create using predominantly historical pre-industrial techniques across fibre, textiles, metals, pottery and photography mediums while drawing from their knowledge of chemistry, environmental sustainability and ancient crafts.
