For August, Moveable Type Studio are in residence at Queensland Museum Railway Workshops and are offering this unique opportunity to explore heritage typography technology and make your own prints.

Whether you're a curious beginner or a design enthusiast, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the timeless craft of letterpress printing in a setting steeped in industrial heritage. Surrounded by the machinery and stories of Queensland’s rail history, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for how print and industry have shaped our culture.

What to Expect:

  • Explore the past by beginning with a guided introduction to the tools and terminology of traditional letterpress – from reglets and galleys to furniture and diphthongs.
  • Get hands-on and dive into the practical side of printmaking by setting type, mixing inks, and pulling your own proofs using wood and metal type.
  • Be creative, hand print a limited-edition artwork while engaging in conversations about the evolution of typography and its role in communication.

In this Workshop You Will:

  • Develop a foundational understanding of letterpress printing and its cultural significance.
  • Learn practical techniques including type setting, colour mixing, and visual hierarchy.
