The year is 1999 and Shannon has a secret

Following a mega sold-out season in 2022, Shake & Stir Theatre Co’s critically acclaimed adaptation of the best selling memoir by award winning journalist, Shannon Molloy, returns to QPAC this June.

Shannon Molloy is a year 9 student at a rugby-mad all-boys Catholic school in coastal regional Queensland. The year is 1999 and Shannon has a secret that no one can ever find out. Shannon is gay.

Fourteen is an equal-parts uplifting and heart-wrenching account of Shannon’s fourteenth year of life. A year of self-discovery set amidst a backdrop of torment, bullying and betrayal – not just at the hands of his peers, but by the adults who were meant to protect him.

- Broadway World

Should not be missed.

- Blue Curtains Brisbane

In classic Shake & Stir fashion, the performance never shied away from confronting topics, but not without the quick gag slotted in to ease the tension and remind the audience that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

- The Courier-Mail

This generation’s Holding the Man – Fourteen is a moving coming-of-age memoir – extraordinary.

- Australian Arts Review

Shannon's bitter struggle is painfully recognisable and happening in playgrounds around the world. But he not only triumphs, he relives his past using his best weapon: beautiful words.

- Australian Women’s Weekly

A stunning memoir … a unique, hilarious and bittersweet insight into the heart of a boy, the courage of survival, and the fierce love of a mother.
