Join Piers Lane AO in the Concert Hall for this breathtaking concert.

The concert begins with Grieg’s Holberg Suite, Op 40 (correctly titled From Holbergís Time: Suite in the Olden Style). The suite comprises four Baroque dances of French origin preceded by a Prelude, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884. It exemplifies nineteenth-century music that makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century.

It is followed by Liszt’s Sonata in B minor, one of his greatest achievements, which he dedicated to Schumann. The Sonata is Wagnerian and orchestral in its scope. When Wagner heard the sonata, he wrote to him, “The Sonata is beautiful beyond all belief, great, lovable, deep, and noble, just as you are.” The second half of the concert will be Chopin Nocturnes by Candlelight, evoking the intimate atmosphere of the Parisian salons of the nineteenth century, a much loved recital celebrating the 30th anniversary of Medici Concerts.

London-based Australian pianist Piers Lane AO has a flourishing international career, performing with many of the world’s top orchestras and conductors. He is Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition.
