When Puppets go Bad

As children, the dream of our toys springing to life has always sparked fascination … imagine if that dream were true? Decades before Pixar’s Toy Story, such fascinations captivated Igor Stravinsky in his masterpiece, Petrushka. Dance along with the Queensland Youth Symphony (QYS) and puppet master Simon Hewett as they take on the mischievous, selfish and often violent character, Petrushka.

Evocative sounds continue as we finish the evening with Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. Prokofiev was often called a composer of the machine age, and his early scores are full of the grinding, relentless energy of machines and industry. But as with this symphony, his music is also fragile and tender, and full of gorgeous melodies unmatched by any other twentieth century composer.

Join them for a concert that explores control, emotion, and the stories we tell – both on stage and in our imaginations.
